This building for UCSB’s Housing and Residential Services was designed with both low-tech and high-tech environmental performance in mind. A center atrium combined with innovative shading systems allowed a passive cooling approach, whereby no air conditioning is needed.
The building was designed and sited to activate a campus crossroads, creating a set of courtyards to define the building entry. Native coastal planting around the site and on the sedum-planted green roof require minimal irrigation and give a verdant identity to the building.
